Haupatu Scholarship

Description

This scholarship recognises the value of student athletes and sports in general to the wellbeing of the University of Canterbury community, and aims to support those who are representing at a regional and/or national level while studying at the University. 25 scholarships are available in 2026. 

Amount: $7,500
Tenure: 1 year
Applications: 2026 sport scholarship applications open on Thursday 12th June and close on Thursday 7th August 2025. 

What you need to know

Eligibility

Applicants must be age-group regional and/or national representatives in sporting codes. They must be intending to begin their first year of full-time study in a programme for an undergraduate degree at the University. Applicants must have completed, or be completing, a University Entrance qualification or equivalent, and have studied at secondary level in the year of application (or in the previous year if they are on a gap year). They must be:
a. New Zealand or Australian citizens; or
b. holders of New Zealand residence class visas; or
c. international students studying at secondary level in New Zealand.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

By accepting the award, a recipient agrees to, during the year of tenure, trial for membership of a relevant sports club at the University, and, if selected: a. play in a team for that club; and b. be available to represent the University at the applicable University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand tournament, at the recipient’s own expense.
