Women's Gym

16 November 2023

The Women’s Gym space is a small, more private room designed to provide a supportive training area to enable you to work towards your personal best.

HOW TO APPLY
Our priorities

Comfort and confidence: We've created a private space where you can feel comfortable and confident, free from judgment.

All the essentials to have a great workout: It is a small space, so we’ve equipped it with squat racks, cable machine, benches and assorted free-weight equipment.

In providing this service, we respectfully ask male members to use the other areas of the facility, where you will find all the same equipment.

Important Operational Information

From time to time, UC Rec&Sport has operational needs that require us to book the women’s gym for a specific activity or group of users. For example, Discover Lifting, professional development sessions, or club bookings. We endeavour to balance usage to allow us to continue to offer a range of services to our ever expanding and diverse membership.

How to find out when the Women’s Gym space is booked

Load up our Women's Gym Availability Schedule.

All booked activites are listed here, so you can get an idea of general availability outside of these booked sessions.

This can be viewed via the app, by checking the time and day you're planning to workout, to see if there's a class in the Women's Gym at that time.

This live availability schedule is also viewable on the display outside the Women’s Gym entrance. Class schedules and ad-hoc bookings may change from time-to-time, to allow us to adapt to the needs of the RecCentre.

Health and Safety

To meet our Health and Safety requirements, please be aware of the following:

  • The Women’s Gym space is monitored by security cameras at all times.
  • Our male professional fitness and maintenance staff may be required to enter the space to assist members in harm’s way, to tidy, clean and sanitise the space.
  • We will do our best to minimise this requirement, entering only for emergency assistance, when female users are in the room.
  • As it is for other rooms in the facility, when a room is booked for a class, we do not ordinarily allow non-class participants to undertake alternative activities. Due to scheduling pressures, unfortunately we are unable to guarantee the gender for the staff member leading the session, or of the participants. This will depend entirely on who has elected to join the class, and the staff we have available to roster.

Is this legal?

There are many other fitness clubs in New Zealand who operate this kind of service. The legal advice we have received is that yes, it is legal, as long as we ensure men are not disadvantaged in any way. To ensure this, all equipment that is provided in the women’s gym, is also available in the rest of the centre.   You will find all of this equipment duplicated (and more) in the other areas of our facility.
