Chinese CULTURE ON THE ROAD - Bringing Chinese Culture to Christchurch Schools

Chinese Culture on the Road is a cultural outreach initiative led by the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury (CIUC). Designed as a one-day or half-day event, it aims to promote multicultural understanding, cultivate an appreciation for Chinese traditions, and spark interest in learning the Chinese language among students in Christchurch.

Schools are invited via email in March, with session slots available throughout the year. In these events, we offer a selection of immersive, hands-on activities that are updated annually to ensure a fresh and engaging experience. The activities can be tailored to the school's needs and include, but are not limited to:

  • Chinese calligraphy
  • Martial arts
  • Mooncake making
  • C-pop dance

If an invitation has not been received previously but there is an interest in hosting this event, we encourage you to reach out to us directly.

Chinese Pathway Workshop

Jointly organised by the Chinese and Sinophone Studies Programme and CIUC, this annual workshop invites secondary school students who are currently studying Mandarin or demonstrate a strong interest in the language to participate in a day of cultural and academic enrichment on the UC campus.

Held in Term 3, the programme features cultural performances, interactive activities, hands-on workshops, guest lectures, information on scholarship opportunities, and more. The workshop is designed to support and inspire students on their Mandarin learning journey by providing clear pathways for continued study. Complimentary lunch is provided.

CHINESE LANGUAGE WEEK & IMMERSION DAY

As part of the national celebration of New Zealand Chinese Language Week, held annually in late August and early September, CIUC organises and supports a wide range of cultural activities in schools, libraries, and community venues. Given the high level of interest and limited availability during this period, organisations wishing to host Chinese cultural events are strongly encouraged to contact CIUC early in the year to secure a place in the schedule.

Other Cultural Activities

With a commitment to strengthening multicultural engagement in Christchurch and across the South Island, CIUC offers tailored cultural activities year-round for local communities. Organisations interested in hosting cultural events or exploring collaboration opportunities are warmly invited to contact Ms Qi Li at qi.li@canterbury.ac.nz for further information.
