HOW TO APPLY
About the workshops

As part of your child's involvement with the Better Start Literacy Approach, a series of workshops are offered. Your child's teacher will be able to tell you when the workshops are scheduled for your school.

In these workshops you will learn about what you can do at home to support your child's early reading success. You may also like to explore our resources for families, for more books and ideas.

Workshop 1
Breaking the code

The first workshop provides an overview of the new approach to literacy teaching at your child’s school. This includes an overview of the research behind the Better Start Literacy Approach, and an introduction to the new readers your child will be bringing home.

You will also learn how you can help your child learn to ‘break the code’ when reading, by drawing attention to and playing with the sounds in words.

Workshop 2
The Language Key

The second workshop focuses on other ways to support your child’s reading development, with a focus on language.

The workshop will explore how to use the Phonics Plus readers and other quality children’s books to help grow the number of words your child knows and can use, whether in English or a different language spoken in your home.
